Redbacks Beat Mudchooks
[ Saturday, 14 April 2012 ]
The Braidwood Redbacks made a strong return to the Monaro Second Division rugby competition with a 22-17 win over the Bungendore Mudchooks at Captains Flat. The game was the opening match for the 2012 season and the win to the Redbacks means that they now hold the Palerang Shield for this season.
It was a close fought match in which both teams scored three tries each, but the real difference between the two teams was the superior vigour the Redbacks showed at the breakdown where they often knocked the Mudchooks players off the ball forcing many ball turnovers. The Mudchooks played well in patches, but made too many errors with some silly passes and penalties costing them dearly.
A highlight for the Mudchooks was the introduction of six new players into the team including Kane Perry, who scored a try. It was good to see the younger players from last season now in the starting line-up and also the return of two players who have been away for the past few years. All these players made significant contributions to the match, and as the new look Mudchook team settles down, the error rate should decrease and the combinations between players should improve.
Tymlock Fencing 3 points – Jason Brodrick; Bungendore Rural Services 2 points - Dave McDonald; Royal Hotel 1 point – Roy Watson; Bungendore Community Bank coach’s award Jason Brodrick; Chicks Pick – Jason Brodrick.
The Mudchooks play their next match against Jindabyne at Bungendore on 21 April, with a 2:30pm kick off.
